These are all excellent points, thanks, Jackie! One of my pet peeves is to have to go through an entry page/portal to get to content. There always seems to be a door (?) and the need to click the word "Enter." There are no navigational tabs, just the choice to enter. This is not enchanting, it is annoying.
I usually leave at this point.
Black background with grey or white copy are not recommended unless there is precious little copy on the site, say, picture captions only. I do NOT want to get a headache trying to read a website.
Too many subheads are another annoyance. In an effort to break articles up into "eyebites" many designers destroy the coherence of the written piece. No more than three subheads with links in an article, please. Trust your viewers to slog through the copy. Well written, engaging content will capture a viewer.

Thanks s o much for the great post! I'm really into social media marketing, especially Facebook marketing and FBML. You are exactly right, Marie. I was in the dental field for 22 yrs and when I got down sized I took my knowledge of internet marketing and started my own consulting firm, TargetedLocal.com. I now do this full time and love every minute of it.

I'm a retired online media publicist with 14 years of online experience. I've been through several economic ups and downs and yet my business stayed intact simply because I made the changes necessary to meet the current demand. There is opportunity in EVERY economic climate. I agree Jackie, don't get sucked into the doom and gloom mentality. Instead, find ways to help others out of it.

Yup, authority websites and online forums of your niche are definitely good places to start as far as building quality links is concerned. However, we should remember not to be too aggressive when doing link building as you don't wanna be too spammy.

Great post! I am just starting out in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it well - resources like this article are incredibly helpful. As our company is based in the US, it?s all a bit new to us. The example above is something that I worry about as well, how to show your own genuine enthusiasm and share the fact that your product is useful in that case.
